Volunteer Opportunities

*Roles marked with an asterisk are most urgently needed for the 2023-24 school year.

Treasurer*

  • Serve as a voting member of the PTSA executive board, attend board meetings one weekday or weeknight per month via Zoom.

  • Track PTSA finances in MoneyMinder and Excel, and keep records in accordance with NCPTA guidelines. (Training provided.)

  • Process check requests twice per month.

  • Provide Treasurer’s report at monthly meetings.

  • Receive special budget requests and present at monthly PTSA board meetings. .

President*

  • Preside over monthly PTSA meetings, one weekday or weeknight per month, via Zoom.

  • Manage PTSA volunteers and activities.

  • Serve as primary liaison between PTSA and Northwood Administration.

  • Previous PTSA experience and/or willingness to participate in NCPTA training preferred.

Webmaster*

  • .Update the PTSA website using  Squarespace. No coding experience needed, just basic computer skills.

  • Add photos, forms, meeting minutes and other content to website as needed. 

  • Export “orders” to spreadsheet and provide to treasurer as needed.

  • This position could be done by a student who is interested in a leadership opportunity.

  • Time commitment: 1-2 hours per month, maybe more in August. Flexible hours, no meetings required.

Staff Appreciation Team*

  • Work within PTSA budget to plan staff appreciation events, such as Back to School Breakfast, Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week and other ways to show our awesome Northwood staff how much we love them!

  • Report to PTSA leadership on staff appreciation activities, and take photos for social media.

  • The staff appreciation team does not need to attend PTSA meetings, but should be available to pick up food and other items from restaurants and stores, and set up and clean up at school during the day.

Secretary

  • Take attendance and minutes during PTSA general meetings and board meetings. 

  • Maintain records.

  • Serve as a voting member of the PTSA executive board, attend board meetings one weekday or weeknight per month via Zoom

Vice-President

  • Fill in when President is absent and help with PTSA projects as needed.

  • Serve as a voting member of the PTSA executive board, attend board meetings one weekday or weeknight per month, 8:30-9:30 a.m. via Zoom.

  • Train to take over President role next year.

  • The Vice-President role can be split into two or more positions that specialize in different areas, for example, communications and volunteer management.

Thrift Shop Representative

  • Attend monthly PTA Thrift Shop board meetings one Monday evening per month via Zoom.

  • Enter thrift shop hours worked by clubs and groups into a spreadsheet and report to PTSA Treasurer.

  • Provide information to club and team leaders about volunteering at the PTA Thrift Shop.

  • Promote thrift shop donations and volunteerism within the Northwood community.

  • The thrift shop rep does not have to supervise work sessions.

Thrift Shop Workgroup Supervisor

  • Supervise one or more evening or weekend work sessions per month at the Cole Park or Pittsboro PTA Thrift Shop.

  • Work group supervisors do not need to attend PTSA board meetings or Thrift Shop board meetings.

Spirit Wear Coordinator

  • Work with our online spirit wear vendor to select spirit wear items.

  • Provide content to PTSA VP of Communications and webmaster to promote spirit wear sales. 

  • No money collection, fulfillment or in-person sales needed. Our vendor ships directly to families. 

Membership Coordinator

  • Help promote PTSA Memberships by providing content to VP of communications and possibly manning a PTSA table at school open house (evening).

  • Maintain membership roster.

  • Memberships are now completely paperless, so this job can be done online from home and ho handling of money or paper forms is required.

Audit Review Committee

  • Participate in the PTSA’s annual financial review.

  • No special financial credentials are required. If you have an eye for detail and can balance a checkbook, you can serve on this committee. Time commitment is approximately 2-3 hours during July, 2021..

  • One audit review committee member serves as the chair and reviews monthly bank statements to make sure there is supporting documentation for each transaction.

Grant Writer

  • Research and apply for grants for the PTSA.

Ad Hoc Volunteer List*

  • Sign up for the PTSA’s “ad hoc” volunteer list to help out occasionally as need arises. (No obligation, we’ll let you know when there is a volunteer opportunity and you may accept or decline.)
